LICENSING AND CHILD PROTECTION

There are many variations in the type, length, content etc of child protection training workshops which are delivered throughout the country.  As with CRB checks this is an important area and the ASA needs to be confident that evidence submitted as part of the licensing scheme meets the needs of teachers and coaches.  To achieve this the ASA is following the recommendations made by Sport England and only the training programmes listed below can be accepted:

1.Sportscoach UK workshop titled ‘Good Practice Child Protection’.  There are two acceptable versions of this workshop.  One is delivered by the ASA and uses swimming specific examples etc.  The second is the generic workshop delivered by Sportscoach UK, normally as part of the County Sports Partnerships.

For more information on the Sports Coach UK workshop click here

· Child protection training delivered by the Area Child Protection Committees (part of Social Services) or the Local Children Safeguarding Boards.

· Football Association – Child Protection and Best Practise

· Netball – Duty of Care Child Protection Training

· Gymnastics – Child Protection Awareness Workshop

Q. What about Child Protection training delivered by my local authority?

A. There is a considerable variation across the country in respect of local authority child protection training, many of which tend to focus on local procedures and policies rather than the wider issue of child protection.  For this reason these courses are not acceptable for licensing purposes.

Q. Can my local authority training programme be considered for inclusion in the list above?

A. Possibly.  It is suggested that you speak with the Child Protection in Sport Unit which has been established by Sport England.
