COMPETITION
There are many different organisations, both mainstream and disability specific, that provide opportunities for swimmers with a disability. But for many swimmers there is still a lack of knowledge of the competitive opportunities that are available to them.

Disability Specific Competitions These competitions are specific to the individual's disability. For example British Blind Sport, CP Sport. Many have their own systems of classification but they essentially allow swimmers with the same kind of disability to compete together.
Multi-Disability Competitions These competitions allow people with different disabilities to swim against one another. A good example of this is Disability Sport England events.
Integrated Competitions These are when able-bodied and disabled swimmers compete together in the same races, for example ASA County Championships.
Multi-Disability Events These are specific multi-disability races included within the programme of mainstream competitions, for example the ASA National Long Course Championships and a number of Regional Championships.
| Resources for Inclusive Events | The ASA has developed a number of initiatives to ensure that swimmers with a disability can access inclusive events:
Functional Ability Card The ASA have introduced the Functional Ability Card to assist swimmers with a disability who already have an IPC or British Swimming classification to access ASA events. The card ensures that swimmers will not be disqualified if their classification exempts them from performing a stroke to ASA Technical Law.
To obtain a FAC you need to be a registered ASA / SASA / WASA member over the age of nine and have an IPC or British Swimming classification.
Certificate of Swimming Disability
A number of swimmers have impairments that prevent them from competing against able bodied competitors. The purpose of the certificate is to ensure that disabled competitors do not get penalised for performing a stroke incorrectly due to their disability and who:
- Have not yet been classified - Do not wish to undergo classification - Are not able to compete in disability specific events
Certification will only be given to swimmers with a permanent disability and not to swimmers suffering from a short term incapacity.
The certificate is valid for 2 years and will need to be re-applied for.
To obtain a certificate, a swimmer should download the application form and return it to the address stated along with a record of the problem and proof of the disability from a physiotherapist, GP or hospital consultant.
A laminated certificate will then be issued for presentation to the referee before the start of a race.
