Favourite event: 100m Breaststroke, because Adrian Moorhouse was one of my heroes.
Finest ever performance/Why: Breaking the Commonwealth record at the Olympic Trials in Sheffield in the 100m Breaststroke. I have seen the rest of the world move the event forward over the past couple of years and I knew I was as good as those swimmers, and proved that in Sheffield. I just got in and did it. I was very surprised about breaking the one minute barrier. I knew it would happen, but I just did not know when.
First senior international meet: European Short Course Championships in Dublin 2003.
Role models: Adrian Moorhouse and Nick Gillingham. I watched them both as a kid. Also Michael Johnson it is great to see someone do something special.
My aspirations are: Simply to be the best I can. I have moved my focus away from external items like medals to concentrate on internal goals.
Tip for the top: Consistency. I have been relatively consistent for the past Olympic cycle (last four years). Also, train the race plan.
Life after swimming: Just in case I did not qualify for the Olympics, I had some jobs lined up! I have a mortgage to think about and I’m getting married next year. I simply love swimming and I am just trying to enjoy the moment.
Music: The Duffy album is great. Listen to the Stepping Stone track, amazing.
If I wasn’t a swimmer I would be a: I think I would have been world class at something else. Think I am that sort of person.
Football, Cricket or Rugby: Football. I especially enjoy England games.
Describe yourself in three words: Honest / Open / Passionate
Would most like to meet: Steve Irwin, but that is not going to happen now, or Vernon Kay, he’s a good northern lad.
Most prized possession: Sense of humour.
Biggest influence on career: So many, my fiancé Erica, my parents, Ian Oliver, Ken Nesworthy and all at EIS.
