Sarah began her career as a junior in 2003 and as well as diving, says gymnastics is one of her passions.  Born in Plymouth, she still trains there today and cites both her parents and coach Andy Banks as the biggest influences on her career.

Her finest sporting moment was winning gold at the British Championships and subsequently qualifying for the Commonwealth Games 2006, where Sarah finished fourth in the 10m synchro event.  She also came 10th in the 10m platform dive and hopes to better this by making it to the final of the next Olympic Games.

So from Mexico, we travelled straight to Canada, I have been to Canada a few times now (8) and I am very comfortable being there.

The olympic pool in Montreal is one of my favourite pools to dive in and i was very excited to compete there again. It was definately not as cold as it was in Decemeber and it wasnt snowing while we were there but there was still snow on the ground from Decemeber! Where they had moved the snow and piled it up in one place.

I was very keen to get in and train and improve my dives from Mexico, I did a few more of each dive then we normally would just to get some numbers in before the competition. Our event was on the last day and we had waited a long time to compete, we had trained a good list before and felt we were ready for a good result.

We competed on Sunday 4th May, we finished 7th but scored a British record and a PB at 316.62. Even though we scored a PB, we came out feeling we could have dived a lot better, but a PB was a positive thing to come away with. The competition was the highest standard competition we have been in. There was some very high scores coming up and with Monique still having her injury, I felt will did ok.

This month was also the World Series in Sheffield, all week myself and Monique had been training great lists and we felt we were definately in for a great result. We competed on Sunday 25th May, it was great having the crowd behind us and diving in a home pool.

We scored 308.46 and came 2nd behind the Canadian pair! Even though I was very happy to come away with 2nd, it was very disappointing we did not compete like we had been training and I can't really put down why? But we will just keep doing what we have been doing in training and go into Rostock, Germany in June with the same attitude we went in with in Sheffield!

april 2008 blog

Because of the busy year ahead of us. Monique and myself decided it would be a good plan if we took some time out to have a weeks holiday. Monique was born in South Africa and wanted to go back home for a week. So we decided we would go to South Africa, where there is a lot of sun and do a bit of light training while we were there! Great! It was so good to have that weeks holiday, especially in South Africa, we got to train outside and go to the beach all week, come back with a tan and all ready for training again.

Then we came back... to reality ... and trained again for the World Series in Mexico! We had a week to get ready and travel to Mexico, we travelled to Tijuana on the 21st April. Mexico wasnt the best competition for us, Monique pulled her groin during the week in Mexico and i was having a few technical issues on some of my dives. Also, we had to repeat our last dive due to a child falling off the balcony and the judges not seeing our dive! The 2nd of our twist was very good though, scoring 84 points! Even though we didnt dive definately to our best, we still scored 300.80, which again is over 300. I would have liked to see a bit more of Mexico, maybe next time when we are in a different part.

From Mexico, we travelled straight to Canada and were confident we would put in a better performance. The travelling from Mexico to Canada was very tiring! The whole journey door to door took us about 20 hours! So we had a day off before we trained in Montreal.

After recovering from the World Cup in February, it was back to training to get ready for the European Championships in Eindhoven. It was hard going from the World Cup in China, as firstly we had to get over jetlag and colds which were picked up, into another competition but myself and Monique were very excited to go and have another good competition and win a gold!

We left for Holland on the 15th March to train in the new dutch pool. It was a really nice pool, just a little bit cold. Because the pool was cold, Monique picked up a tricep injury and my back became very sore but we managed it well with our physiotherapistm Gareth. Training was going really well all week considering and we competed on 22nd March.

For this competition, there was a prelim and final format. We dived well in the prelim coming 2nd behind the German pair and scoring 307.56. We dived in the final just as good as we did in the prelim, if not better, but felt we did not get the marks we deserved and the other teams raised their game. We finished 4th, scoring 305.76. We were very gutted after competing because our goal and focus was the gold.

The best thing about the European Championships was watching Tom Daley win his 10m individual event, it was a great atmosphere and well deserved.

Even though we did not get the result we came for, we came away from the European Championships feeling we had a lot we could improve on and decided to concentrate on those changes.

february 2008 blog

This month was the 16th FINA World Cup and the last chance of Olympic qualifying. The World Cup was held in Beijing, China. I competed in the 10m synchro with my partner Monique McCarroll.

On the 3rd February I left to go to the pre-camp in Leeds, Leeds is the best centre in the country to practice synchro, as all of the platforms are 3m wide.

Therefore, we can do every dive together. In Leeds, the team were able to keep practising the lists they were about to perform in China, but we also chilled, went to the cinema and had amazing meals everyday at the Novotel! We were in Leeds for a week before heading to Xian for the holding camp.

We flew to Xian on a long 11 hour flight. Myself and Monique had prepared a sleeping plan so we knew when we got to China, the jetlag should not be too bad.

I slept for 5 hours but at least it was some! When we arrived in Xian, we found ourselves in a luxery 5 star hotel! It was amazing, the food, the rooms, the gym were perfect! We stayed in Xian for just over a week, training at the pool twice a day. The pool itself was great.

The gym consisted on 11 dry boards, 6 trampolines and a platform over a foam pit. Pretty impressive. Myself and Monique trained great through Xian and we also did 2 late sessions at 9pm to prepare for our final at the World Cup, as it was at that time.

In Xian, we had a team day off and went to see the Terracotta Soliders, which were fascinating but it was very cold. We also tried to go to the markets but it was shut, so that was unsuccessful!

On the 16th February, we finally left for Beijing! We were so excited on the night we arrived to see the Olympic pool that we had dinner and left to find it. We were able to spot it from our hotel as it was so bright.

When we had walked arond the 'water cube', which the pool was in, we finally found the entrance. Unsure of whether we were able to enter, we did anyway. As we saw the pool, it was overwelming, it was so big! The boards itself looked great but the seating held 17,000!

After taking pictures, we walked down the steps onto poolside and took a sneaky look off the 10m board before we were called down. It was great to see the pool before we trained in it the next day.

Myself and Monique loved the pool and dry land and were training great leading up to the competition, we felt ready for the competition later on in the week.

The week got off to a great start with our 3m synchro boys qualifying in 4th, and our 10m platform girls qualifying in 9th and 13th.

On the 3rd day, a long time waiting, was our day! We couldnt have prepared and planned anymore for this day so we were confident. We knew the final was the important one so the prelim was just a 'get through' competition.

We were so nervous on our first dive, and to me that was a litlle unexpected of how nervous i would be and that showed. But we dived great and got through the prelim in 8th place and scored 304.

It was comfortable for the prelim knowing we can defineatly dive better. After the prelim, there was quite a long gap, myself and Monique had planned for this so we took our time going back to the hotel, having lunch and watching prison break!

Going to the final was a lot better then going into the prelim, it was more exciting, we knew what we had to do and were confident we were going to do it. We got off to a great start with our first dive scoring 52.20 putting us 2nd!

We also did a great 4th dive scoring 78 points putting us 4th before going into the last dive. We put our front 3 1/2 somersaults piked last as we both know we can score great points individually and on synchro.

The dive was enough to finish 7th! Therefore, qualifying a place in the olympics! We scored 313, one point off our pb so we were very pleased :-) great result.

The rest of the week was just as enjoyable and nerve racking with Blake and Thomas coming 3rd in the 10m synchro! Thomas and Pete qualifying a spot for themselves, Thomas coming 7th and Pete 8th!

The toughest competition was the girls 3m synchro, where Tandi and Hayley scored enough to also qualify a spot. They dived the best they have ever dived and was one of the most pleasing results of the meet.

On the last day, was the dive off where Louise and Jodie had to compete in a battle for the final spots in the 3m and the same for Blake and Ben. Both Ben and Jodie dived great, earning a well deserved place for the olympics!

I had a great time in Beijing and i couldnt have asked for a nicer and more supportive team! Bring on Beijing 2008!

january 2008 blog

At the very start of the month, the British Nationals took place in Manchester. This was the competition to qualify for the World Cup in Beijing.

Me and my partner Monique having already qualified thought we would go into nationals with no pressure and aim to get over 300 points.

However, we found ourselves even more nervous than the previous qualifying competitions that we had already done! But being nervous must have been a good thing because we dived yet another PB, scoring 314.1 and won.

This score is an equal British record with Tonia Couch and Stacie Powell. I also dived individually and scored 314.5, which, for me, was my British PB so i was happy enough to take 4th place.

Also, this month myself and Monique did the Madrid Grand Prix as a warm up competition for the World Cup. We went there to get a medal and came back with a silver medal! We AGAIN scored a PB which was 314.7!

Our required dives wernt quite up to scratch which shows how much more we have left in us. We out dived the Canadian pair who have previously been big medal winners.

After Madrid, me and Monique started training again. Monique came down to Plymouth and I went up to Southampton.

This started our preperation for the World Cup which is very important in our training. We have written down goals, training plan and schedule, rest days and eating plans in case the food in Beijing isn't great!

So we are now ready to start training in China were we go for a 2 week training camp before the competition starts!

december 2007 blog

I have just come back from a very cold and snowy Canada having qualified for the World Cup team in 10m synchro with Monique! Myself and Monique had a great competition even with a dodgy inward dive. We scored 310, which is a British international record and would have put us 3rd in this years World Championships, so 2/2 competitions becoming the top British pairing means we have qualified for the World Cup in China next year. We can now go into Januarys nationals with no pressure and use it as another competition to practice for the upcoming competitions. We came 3rd overall being pipped by the Canadian 2nd pairing who scored 314.

I also competed in the individual 10m event, which was a long competition with 29 competitors. I had a steady competition coming 10th and scoring 308.50, with my training partner Tonia Couch just behind me in 11th scoring 308.30! I was the top British individual but decided to pull out of the final, which was top 12, as the synchro event was straight after the individual final on the same day as the prelim! My goal was to go to Canada to qualify and concentrate on the synchro event, I decided that the final would have been too much and may not have had enough energy to keep going.

november 2007 blog

I went to GBR vs GER competition this month which was also the first leg out of three to qualify for synchro at the world Cup in China in February. The competition went very well and me and my synchro partner Monique McCarroll were the top British pairing scoring 303. We had to do our last dive for 8's individually and 8's synchronised, which was a lot of pressure but we did it! We came 2nd overall as we were beaten by the German pairing. After GBR vs GER, I went back to Plymouth to train and for 2/3 days of the week I went up to Southampton to train with Monique to make sure we were prepared for the next leg. Our next leg out of the three will be in Canada at the beginning of December, just one more to go!

I also passed the first part of my massage course!

october 2007 blog

This month was really about training for the GBR vs GER and Camo, Canada competition. I have been training well but not quite as much as i would like to due to a back injury but its starting to get better and getting treatment regularly. I did go to the Swimtastic Awards this month and enjoyed it very much.

It was fun to get involved with the children playing the games in the pool and i enjoyed seeing the children winning the awards in the evening, I was very impressed with every winner. Some very talented people.

september 2007 blog

At the start of this month I travelled to Sheffield to watch the first leg of the FINA Diving World Series. I enjoyed supporting the GB team as they competed well and I learnt a lot from the experience.

Obviously I enjoyed watching the women's 10m individual and synchro competitions, seeing as they are my events also. It was great to see the worlds best athletes train and compete at home, especially hearing the crowd cheer for Thomas Daley. That was pretty amazing.

Myself and my synchro partner have been training well together and have definately improved as a team. I have put up all of my optionals onto 10m now and working on each individual dive to then train a list at the end of the week. I have also completed two weekends of my sports massage diploma in Southampton. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be but im still enjoying it! Getting ready for GBR vs Germany now!

Next month is the Swimtasic Awards in Stratford upon Avon, which I am looking forward to and attending the evening dinner straight from a synchro camp at the brand new diving pool in Leeds!

august 2007 blog

This month has been about getting back into training and putting my optionals back up onto 10m. I now have 4 out of 5 of my optionals back up on 10m and working on those throughout each week. I will hopefully be putting my newest dive - back 3 1/2 up on 10m later so i can work on the lead up more.

Me and my synchro partner have been working hard to get together to train at least twice a week. We have planned that I go up to Southampton every other week on a Thursday and Friday and Monique will then come down to Plymouth in between.

We will be working towards getting a good result at the GBR vs GER meet in November at Sheffield.

I am looking forward to going to watch the first leg of the World Series in Sheffield and supporting the GBR team at the start of September.

But training is going well and hopefully will continue!

july 2007 blog

This month I took a very much needed two week break in Lanzarote.

It was really nice and I did not want to come back home to all the rain! But back off holiday and back into hard training ready for January Trials! I have been back in training for couple of weeks now and starting to put my list back up on 10m.

Team Kelloggs have recently funded me a laptop which is very useful when travelling. I have also taken up a Sports Massage Diploma based in Southampton for 10 weekends over 9 months which I am very excited about, the laptop will be necessary then. This starts in September. Team Kelloggs also very kindly funded me to do this sports massage course and without their help I would not have been able to do it.

At the end of August I am going to watch the FINA Diving World Series, the first leg is in Sheffield. This will be good experience to go and watch the top 8 divers in each competition compete.

june 2007 blog

Since Madrid, I had 3 weeks to train for the ASA National Championships. All was going well until the weak before when I picked up a back injury, trapping a nerve. I only missed four days of training but it still throws you out! Luckily my back was fixed quickly due to top treatment I received and I started training again.

I competed well overall, nothing special but I was pleased that I did not drop a dive badly, I just scored average on dives that were upright but were unable to have a finish on the end. I was very pleased how my new dive went, a back 3 1/2 somersaults off the 10m. I got an average of 6.5 in the prelim, semi and final.

Myself and my synchro partner dived well scoring 273, we did well to dive like this as Monique was carrying quite a bad injury from the week before! We were unable to train leading up to the competition and we only trained our list once on the day of the competition!

Individually, in the prelim I scored 274 which put me in first position, in the semi I scored 293 which put me in second behind rival Stacie Powell and in the final I scored 277 finishing second behind Stacie again.

These scores have enabled me to be put up for selection for GBR v Germany meet in November!

may 2007 blog

I started off training well for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid but towards the end of the month I ended up catching a throat infection. I had to attend the camp in Southampton a week before I had to travel. I couldn't train as much as I would have liked to and went to Madrid having only trained the day before.

The competition format was very different to what I was used to and they stuck my synchro competition with Becky Gallantree and the prelim, semi and final individual 10m competition all on the same day!

I started well in synchro and we finished 5th scoring 272. This was our first time competing together and we had only training a couple of times.

I went into the prelim not feeling great and with my shoulder playing up a bit I didn't dive great. I finished 16th with a disappointing score of 259.

Even though I was disappointed, I know that I had the worst preperation and I have learnt that good preperation is needed for a good performance.

I have now finished the international season and training for Senior Nationals at the beginning on July in Sheffield where the top 4 individually can qualify for a friendly competition between Great Britain and Germany.

april 2007 blog

I
went to Zhuhai in China in the middle of April. I got a PB of 319.50 in the 10m Individual Platform, a performance I was very pleased with as I performed my new dive - a back 3 1/2 somersaults off the 10m platform.

I went through to the semi-finals and being in a tough round, I finished in 6th place and did not go through to the final even though I got a higher score than some of the divers in the second semi-final.

It is just by chance that you get put in a semi-final that is slightly tougher than the other. In the prelims, positions 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 go through to semi A and positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 go in semi B. I finished 11th in the preliminary round and 8th overall.

I also had a good performance in the 10m synchro event with my partner Monique McCarroll where we scored 303.18. We came in 3rd place and got a bronze medal. China was a very nice pool and I enjoyed the trip.

I have just come back from Montreal in Canada competing again in the 10m individual and 10m synchro. I did not have a great performance in the preliminary round but just scraped through to the semi-final, hoping to improve my performance to get into the final.

I started the semi with a good, positive dive but then had a major error on my second dive, and knew from then on that I wouldn't be able to push back to get into the final. The remaining dives well and got a score of 279.95 which I was pleased with considering I did a bad 207c.

My synchro partner and myself dived well with a score of 282.06 and came in 6th position.

I am now training for the Grand Prix in June to be held in Madrid, Spain. I am competing individually and also performing the synchro event with Rebecca Gallantree on the 10m platform.

march 2007 blog

This I’m off to China on the 8th April to compete at the Grand Prix in Zhuhai. I compete on Friday 13th! I am performing a 10m synchro with my partner Monique McCarroll and I am also doing 10m Individual the next day.

This past month I have just been training hard and working on my new dive - 207c from 10m. I will compete this for the first time in China which is very exciting. I have had a back injury this month which put me out for a couple of days but its on the mend and I am back into training ready for China at the end of the week!

february 2007 blog

I went to a 2012 training camp at the start of the month in Sheffield. The coaches tested our ability to do a list of dives and various exercises in the gym.

I also did a lot of back 3 1/2's tucked in the rig. I have recently put up that dive on 10m, which is now my newest dive. I will next be competing that in the China Grand Prix in April.

I have been off ill for the last couple of weeks and some of our pool is out of use so I have just been getting back into hard land training but easier pool training.

january 2007 blog

After coming back after Christmas from a disappointing Nationals I started to work on a new dive for my list - 207c on 10m. I learnt the leadup on 5m which is currently going well. My list will start going back up on 10m again at the end of January ready for the Armada Cup in February in Plymouth! Hopefully then I willl be able to use my new dive.
