MAIN NEWS

Worlds apart – World short course championships

Towards the end of the penultimate finals session, as the records continued to tumble, Steve Parry came bouncing into the mixed zone, where the media meet the swimmers after their races. The Olympic medallist turned master of ceremonies was desperate for information. ‘How many world records are we up to?’ he asked. The poor man needed to pass the information on to around 6000 spectators but had lost count. He wasn’t the only one, for this was a meet where an event without a record or two barely warranted a mention. The total number of world records set over the five days of the 9th World Short Course Championships was 18. Many swimmers found themselves inside an old world record yet still not winning the gold medal – including Britain’s silver-winning Hannah Miley, Lizzie Simmonds and the women’s 4x200m freestyle team.
