MAIN NEWS
Keep fighting – Stephanie Millward’s battles have been many – and not just in the pool, as Peter Hassall reports.
Standing next to Stephanie Millward and hearing her speak eloquently and with a fleeting smile on her face, it is easy to forget the hard times that lie behind the smile. But this is a girl who has been to depths that most of us can never imagine let alone relate to, and I don’t just mean in the swimming pool. She’s good, oh yes, she’s a good swimmer – good enough to win national titles and compete for her country. But that was in another life as an able-bodied swimmer. And I would like to tell you that medalling at the Beijing Paralympic Games has just confirmed her as one of the world’s top disability swimmers. And how her tale of triumph over tragedy is an inspiration to us all. But it didn’t quite work out that way.
