Changing of the guard? Synchro nationals

Walking into the GL1 in Gloucester was a strange experience this year. I was arriving for the British synchro championships and the asa national age groups for the first time since retiring from the sport four years ago. As I was led through the changing rooms towards the media box on poolside, that oh-so-familiar smell of gelatine wafting past, I realised that I was here without that usual belly full of nerves.

The other realisation was that from this year on, synchro would have to raise its game. In preparation for next year’s televised Junior European championships, which GL1 will also host, the competition was being hoisted into a wholly new technological era. Gone were the days of card-waving judges. Scores were now being punched into an electronic keypad to automatically appear on the scoreboard….
