Funding and the future – Water polo funding

Water polo has been plunged into crisis by UK Sport’s decision to cut its four-year funding by more than 50 per cent – from £3,147,000 to £1,450,000. Roger Guttridge and Helen Gorman asked some of the sport’s key people where water polo goes from here.

David Sparkes has promised that British Swimming will do everything it can to get both men’s and women’s teams to the 2012 Games.

The chief executive told Swimming Times: ‘We are slightly more encouraged by some innovative partnership working by the BOA, BPA, UK Sport and LOCOG, who are clearly working together to look to make a significant contribution to bridging the gap from the missing £50m.

‘While there is still some way to go in discussions, it does provide an opportunity for some commercial partners from LOCOG to make a valuable contribution towards ensuring that British representation in water polo and other sports not currently fully funded takes place in 2012.’
